If he says "you're", which I am inclined to, is it true that sometimes American speakers use both in practice in the grammar structure - "if you were"? Here is an extract from one forum - That said, in my region (somewhere in the sweaty boot of the US) of the Deep South (South Eastern US), we do use -'s and -'re for both is/was and are/were… but that is like really colloquial and I am not fixing to explain all of why it's a bad idea to use that anywheres else.
