Does the phrase "studied a lot" fit this context?

I have made up the sentences below.

(1) Jack studied a lot. He doesn't know why he can't get a good job no matter how hard he tries.

Most of my non-native friends revised my first sentence to the one below.

(2) He accomplished an advanced education. He doesn't know why he can't get a good job no matter how hard he tries.

Does the phrase in bold in my original sentence fit this context? Thank you for your help.
 
No, studying is just an action. Jack went through higher education (which includes attending classes, studying, sitting for exams, etc.) which is a process/stage/phase, which should matter in looking for a job.
 
Perhaps:

Jack graduated from college with a degree in [name of subject]. He can't figure out why he can't get a job.
