What is the difference between "I don't need to go there/I don't have to go there" when I mean that it is not necessary for me to go there.
 
What is the difference between "I don't need to go there" and "I don't have to go there" when I mean that it is not necessary for me to go there.
Need = necessity
Have to = obligation
 
As always, which one you use depends on context. (See below.)

Abe: You don't need to do it.
Bob: I know I don't need to. I want to.

Abe: Do you have to do it?
Bob: Yes, I gave my word.
