Quote from a harvard open course "Milton Friedman, the libertarian economist, he points out that many of the functions that we take for granted as properly belonging to government don't."
I know the meaning of the sentence, but it seems like there's something missing here. Is it grammatically right?
Thanks.

They don't belong to the government.

There is an extra "he" in there.

masterding, there's only one r in 'grammatically'.

They don't belong to the government.

They don't properly belong to the government- as this is a libertarian, he might think that functions that do belong to the government, and which many think are rightfully the government's, should not belong to it.

I'm sorry , I don't understand where the exrtra "he" is?
Actually I understand the meaning of the sentence, just the way that "they don't belong to government." is shortened to "don't " seems a little abstruse.
Thank you.

"Milton Friedman, the libertarian economist, he points out that many of the functions...

I am not a teacher.

The extra 'he' is here.

points out that many of the functions that we take for granted as properly belonging to government [this is the noun phrase] do not properly belong to the goverment."

Many of the people you think are sweet natured aren't.
Many of the poeple that you think of as being sweet natured are not actually sweet natured.

The dog you think is his isn't.
The dog that you think is his actually is not really his.
The dog that you think belongs to him does not belong to him.

Try saying it aloud- it could work well in a lecture.

The libertarian would say (and is saying) that many of the things gov't is presently doing are not rightfully the scope of a proper gov't.
