What does "eat through something" mean?
 
It's not very natural for me. If I used "through", I'd say something like "He worked his way through a slice of chocolate cake, an ice-cream cone, a ...".
We use "eat through" when we're talking about erosion.
 
The idea is he ate quite a bit (a lot of food). Hopefully, he won't get indigestion.
