Dear teachers,
I read one question the other day and can't solve it till now. Please help.
Please read the following paragraph first.
Music also plays a major role in other arts. Opera combines singing and music with drama. Ballet and other forms of dancing need music to help the dancers with their steps. Motion pictures use music to help set the mood as well as introduce the actions or enhance its ________ on the audience.
there are four choices given for the blank:
A.force B. effect C. influence D. impact
According to the reference answers given at the end of the exercise book, the correct answer is B.
I don't agree. I think effect, influence and impact are all correct here. and probably impact is the most suitable. because there are collocations like emotional impact, visual impact, and auditory impact, which are closely associated with movies.
I'm confused. Which word is right/the most suitable? What's the nuance among these three words?
I'm looking forward to your help.

Thanks a million.

The influence a movie has is more likely to be associated with the theme dealt with than the music score. Impact doesn't collocate as well as effect with enhance IMO.

There are four choices given for the blank:
A.force No. B. effect Yes. C. influence No. D. impact Yes. I'd say impact because it's stronger. Effect is also good. Force and influence are bad choices.
According to the reference answers given at the end of the exercise book, the correct answer is B.

Tdol's comments are good. Have you looked the words up? What differences do you see in your English dictionary?

Here's how we use the words as nouns:

Force:

- The force of his argument was overwhelming.
- If they resist, use force.

Effect:

- The memo had the effect we'd intended.
- She used the shovel to good effect.

Influence:

- I think Enid's friends are a bad influence on her.
- Your opinion might influence their decision.

Impact:

- The impact wrecked both cars.
- Your tears had quite an impact.

Hope that helps!

I am not a teacher.

Doesn't anyone else see something strange in this sentence, regardless of which word you insert?

'Motion pictures use music to help set the mood as well as introduce the actions or enhance its ________ on the audience.'

The subject of the sentence is 'motion pictures' not 'music'. What does 'its' refer to? For those who might be tempted to answer 'music' that would give us 'Motion pictures use music to enhance the force/effect/influence/impact of the music on the audience.' It is not a good sentence IMO.
