Addressing workplace problems requires a proactive and inclusive approach. Employers must foster a culture of open communication, encourage regular feedback, and set realistic expectations for their teams. Flexible working arrangements can help employees balance personal and professional commitments, reducing stress and increasing job satisfaction. Additionally, offering mental health support and conflict resolution programs can further improve the work environment. Moreover, promoting fairness and transparency in decision-making can minimize office politics and create a more harmonious workplace. By tackling these issues head-on, organizations can create environments where both employees and businesses thrive.

According to the passage above, is the following sentence correct?

“Employee satisfaction improves thanks to the employer's effort to promote flexibility.”

Thank you very much!

Is this your homework?

This exercise was adapted by our Vietnamese teacher based on this reading passage. We are discussing the questions using the information from the text. Since English is not our first language, our understanding might be limited or not entirely accurate. We would really appreciate your help.

What does your teacher have to say about your suggested answer?

She said the sentence above wasn't not true and it wasn 't even mentioned. However, we said the opposite.

We are all English teachers who are eager to learn, and since we're dealing with a language that isn't our mother tongue, disagreements sometimes arise. That's why I turn to the forum to ask native speakers, especially native-speaking teachers.

I think you missed my point. You said that she said that the sentence above "wasn't not true". "Wasn't" means "was not" so you're claiming she said that the sentence "was not not true". That means she said it was true!

I'm sorry for my typing mistake above. I meant "wasn't true".

Hi Tratran. I don't understand what you're asking. Please let me ask you some questions.

Are you saying your teacher wrote the sentence? If they did, why, and was it supposed to be an example of a statement that cannot be supported by the text? And are you saying you think it's a bad example?

Are you a teacher or a student? If you are, do you want to change the detail in your profile?

I just wanted to check if the statement: "Employee satisfaction improves thanks to the employer's effort to promote flexibility." is actually correct based on the passage. We all thought it was, since the information seemed pretty clear, but one teacher said it wasn’t. I'm an English teacher myself, but we always see ourselves as language learners, since English isn't our native language after all.

According to the passage above, is the following sentence correct?

“Employee satisfaction improves thanks to the employer's effort to promote flexibility.”

Yes, it's correct. This is where you find the answer:

Flexible working arrangements can help employees balance personal and professional commitments, reducing stress and increasing job satisfaction.

Unless I'm badly misunderstanding what you've said, it seems clear to me that the person who wrote the sentence you're asking about wrote it deliberately to agree with the text, as some kind of teacher training exercise. Not only does the sentence agree with the text, but it's actually meant to be an example of a sentence that agrees with the text!

Actually, we’re discussing questions for a reading comprehension exercise in English to help students improve their understanding. Among these questions, we have differing opinions about the two below.

For question 1, we think there are two correct answers (C and D), while for question 2, we believe none of the options is appropriate.

However, one teacher insists that question 1 has only one correct answer, which is D, and that C is incorrect. As for question 2, that teacher says the answer is A (powerful).

Our debate has no end in sight, so we decided to post in a reputable forum to ask for help.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the best answer to each of the following questions

The modern workplace, while a hub of productivity and growth, is rife with challenges that affect both employees and employers. Poor communication, lack of work-life balance, and office politics are among the most common problems. Miscommunication can lead to errors and frustration, while excessive workloads cause burnout. Additionally, favoritism or conflicts among employees can create a toxic environment, further undermining morale and productivity. In some organizations, these issues are so prevalent that they hinder both individual and team performance, leaving employees feeling unsupported and undervalued.

. Poor communication usually stems from unclear expectations or the absence of effective channels for feedback. [II] Similarly, the pressure for higher output, often driven by tight deadlines and competition, leads employers to overload their staff. Inflexible policies also play a significant role, making it difficult for employees to manage personal and professional responsibilities. [III] Office politics, on the other hand, arises from favoritism or mismanagement, where personal biases influence decision-making instead of performance or merit. [IV] These underlying causes often remain unaddressed, compounding the issues over time and creating a vicious cycle.

The consequences of these workplace problems are far-reaching. Burnout due to excessive stress can lead to a decline in mental health, frequent absences from work, or even resignation. Miscommunication disrupts workflow and impacts team cohesion, leading to a loss of trust among colleagues. Toxic work environments caused by office politics can result in high employee turnover and a tarnished reputation for the company. Over time, these problems weaken the organization’s ability to achieve its goals and make it difficult to attract or retain talented employees. A disengaged workforce can ultimately result in financial losses, reduced innovation, and diminished competitive advantage.

Question 1. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A. Burnout is the most significant consequence of workplace issues.

B. Workplace problems are caused by poor communication, not unrealistic expectations.

C. Employee satisfaction improves thanks to the employer's effort to promote flexibility.

D. Both mismanagement and favoritism contribute to the problem of office politics.

Question 2.
The word prevalent in paragraph 1 could be best replaced by ______.

A. powerful B. concerning C. ambiguous D. effective

Thank you. Now we see everything.

The answer to question 1 is C, not D. Remember that there can be only one correct answer in this exercise. You have to choose the best answer among the four options, so it doesn't really matter if the wrong answers are factually correct or even if they agree in some way with the text. The answer to question 2 is B, not A.

I sympathise with you and your colleagues in that these questions are either designed to be extremely tough or they're not very well written questions. Who is this test meant to be for?

We are all English teachers who are eager to learn, and since we're dealing with a language that isn't our mother tongue, disagreements sometimes arise. That's why I turn to the forum to ask native speakers, especially native-speaking teachers.

Fair enough. In that case, please amend your profile to state that you're an English teacher. We have other members in the same situation and can see from the other details in their profiles that they're not native English-speakers and we respond appropriately.

This exercise was designed for 12th-grade students. I believe option D in question 1 is also correct, because it’s clearly supported by the passage: “Office politics, on the other hand, arises from favoritism or mismanagement, where personal biases influence decision-making instead of performance or merit.”. I’d like to ask why option B is considered the correct answer in question 2. I’ve checked the dictionary, and “prevalent” is listed as a synonym of “powerful” in the sense of “dominant” (https://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english-thesaurus/prevalent) . So I’m wondering why “concerning” not “powerful” is the right choice in this context. Thank you.

Did you read thread #17?

This exercise was designed for 12th-grade students.

It's not good, in my opinion. It's too hard.

I believe option D in question 1 is also correct, because it’s clearly supported by the passage

You're missing the point. Yes, it's correct and yes it's supported by the passage but it's not the best of the four answers so that's irrelevant. The task is to choose the one statement that is best supported and which most broadly agrees with what the passage says. The 'correct' answer is C, not D. There can only be one correct answer in this type of question.

I’d like to ask why option B is considered the correct answer in question 2. I’ve checked the dictionary, and “prevalent” is listed as a synonym of “powerful” in the sense of “dominant”

Dictionaries are not going to help much, and you don't really need to think about synonymy with this kind of question. Not really.

The word 'prevalent' has a basic sense that something is widespread and common. The fact that the issues are widespread and common is something to be concerned about. That's the message of the paragraph—that there's something we need to worry about, and therefore do something about.
