Does "every third Friday" mean "third Friday in each month" or " 3th, 6th, 9th....Friday from the beginning"?

In my experience, if the third Friday of the month is intended then that's what will be stated: "Volleyball is on the third Friday of every month".
"Every third Friday" means that you miss two Fridays and volleyball is on the next one, then you miss another two… etc.
