In her book Turning to One Another, Margaret Wheatley claims that people have become more and more isolated from each other: 'We no longer seek consolation from one another, but in material goods. The whole world is heading with lightning speed in the wrong direction, away from each other, towards more belongings. We promise ourselves all kinds of things, except each other. We have forgotten the true source of peace and contentment.' Wheatley sees only one remedy:

What does this underlined imply? Does it mean "we don't try to give valuable things to each other"?

No. It means that although we promise ourselves many things, we do not promise other people to ourselves. If she were to try answering your question, Ms. Wheatley might consider rewriting her sentence.

Are those Ms Wheatley's words or the words of someone else discussing her book?
