A dike (dyke) is a wall or embankment built to prevent flooding. As an expression, "hold the dike against" means to take steps to prevent a bad thing from happening.

The government is trying to hold the dike against inflation.
 
A dyke is also a lesbian.
"The police were holding the dyke against the wall after arresting her."

I would NEVER have guessed that meaning. Please provide context.
