My favourite animal is the dog. Correct. However, this may be misunderstood and people might think you mean one specific dog.

See above. You can also say "My favourite animal is a dog". This is more general.

I think "My favorite animal is a dog." is even more likely to be interpreted as referring to a specific dog.
My favorite animal is a dog. His name is Charlie.


"the dog" is the usual way of referring to a species.
The most ferocious animal is the hyena.

What is the difference between 'I like dog.' and 'I like dogs.'?
Does 'I like dog' mean 'I like eating dog meat.'?
