While Charlie's statement may technically be correct, bragging rights for the Statue of Liberty may be a little more complicated.
As per Wikipedia: "According to the United States Census Bureau, Liberty Island has a land area of 59,558 square meters, or 14.717 acres, which is the property of the federal government. A pact between New York and New Jersey states that New York has control of the Island, but taxes go to New Jersey, and the power comes from Jersey City. Liberty Island is located in the Upper New York Bay surrounded by the waters of Jersey City, Hudson County, New Jersey. Liberty Island is one of the islands that is part of the borough of Manhattan in New York. The historical developments which led to this construction created the rare situation of an exclave of one state, New York, being situated in another, New Jersey."

Yes, New York governs it. I'm just saying that geographically, it's not in New York City or state. The statue is in physially located in New Jersey.
As a former New Yorker born in Manhattan, it pains me to say it. But there it is. In New Jersey.
