Please correct my errors if any (expressing addition). I’m expressing the following addition.

278
+
365
-------
643

First we add 5 to 8 to get 13. We write 3 and carry 1.

Then we add 6 to 7 to get 13. 13 plus the carried 1 is 14, so we write 4 and carry 1.

Last we add 3 to 2 to get 5. 5 plus the carried 1 equals 6, and we write 6.

So the sum of 278 and 365 is 643.

-------
I also very appreciate other ways to express the same thing.

Thank you

I would say it's almost impossible to explain simple addition to someone without demonstrating it. Are you planning to say this at the same time as showing someone (or a class of people) a demonstration?

Yes, I will both write the numbers and say words at the same time.

That's all correct and clear. Good.

I trust you've already covered addition of tens and units before bringing in hundreds).

My old maths teacher, Ron Ganser, used to say (while pointing to the relevant numbers)

8 and 5 are 13; 3 down and 1 to carry (writing a small one in the tens column underneath the lower answer line (which you haven't drawn),

7 and 6 are thirteen, add the one and that's 14. 4 down and one to carry (writing a small 1 in the hundreds column underneath the lower answer line).

2 and 3 are 5; add the 1 and write 6 in the hundreds column of the answer.

And Bob's your uncle.
