When someone is chased and they hear their pursuer running after them, how should I describe it?

'He could hear his footsteps.'

'He could hear the sound of his steps/strides.'

Use #1 (if you had helpfully numbered them).

They could hear their pursuer chasing them.

#1. ("numbering" would be unusual)

They don't describe panic or fear to me.

Are they both running?
