Could you tell me the meaning of the phrase "for a time" in the sentence below.

For a time, the only sound was that of pebbles and stones sriking one another.

A guess. :)

In your sentence, I think 'For a time' means like 'at the moment' the action is being done.

It means "for a (period of) time".
