Dear teachers,

I wondr about the meaning of this expression, which I found in the following excerpt from a National Geographic article:

"Undoubtedly, one of the quirkiest sights in nature is the gangly retreat of an Australian frilled lizard".

What does "gangly retreat" exactly refer to?

Thank you in advance,

Giuly

In cases like this, look for synonyms. For example, the word "rangy" also means mobility, to wander or roam. That fits in for some meaning.

Just a suggestion.

What is the association with "rangy"?

The awkward (gangly) movements of this lizard as it runs away (as it retreats).

I read it as well as other definition, but ddidn't manage to understand the meaning of the expression :-(
Did you note this part of the definition? "...very tall and thin and moves awkwardly" the lizard retreats (runs away) in a gangly fashion (on its hind legs, looking very thin and awkward).
