"By the time his old mate Steve McGrath – recently hired as an occasional gear-humper for new dicks on the block AC/DC – told him about the band’s search for a bassist, encouraging him over several beers and games of pool to throw his hat into the ring, Mark had ‘nothing better to do’, working as a clerk at the offices of the Postmaster-General’s Department of the local civil service. ‘So I thought: why not? I was living in a cheap hotel sharing my room with my giant bass rig, bored out of my head and feeling guilty about not being in a proper band".
Mick Wall, "Hell Ain't A Bad Place To Be".

Who is "gear-humper"?

I have never heard that term in the music business but a read it as a "roadie". In other words an assistant who helps set up and break down the equipment at a gig.
