give and take

To be honest, I'm not sure I know what they mean by "exchanging on an even basis". My best guess would be something like me giving you a painting worth £1,000 in exchange for you giving me a car worth £1,000. If that's the kind of thing they're suggesting, I would argue that that's not what "give and take" means!
Thanks for your input.
Dang, there has to be a reason why this definition says that. Can someone from another English speaking country such as the US give their take on this?
Besides, how do you guys feel about "giving and taking" instead(?)?

The AmE usage cited in post #11 is quite different from the 'compromise' aspect. It's close to something like 'back and forth' or 'exchange ideas'.

It's typically used to refer to banter, retorts or even insults, but it can be used to refer to ideas or suggestions. It still doesn't work in the context of the OP.

This meaning is repeated lower down in both AmE and BrE entries.

Can you explain what you mean by the bold(?) words?

If you read further down the additional entries, you'll see the sense of 'exchanging ideas/humor/banter' repeated several times in both AmE and BrE definitions.

Understood.
Anyways, I'm still looking for someone to confirm the phrase can be used the way I did, give their opinion on "giving and taking" in that context or suggest alternatives.

Nobody has so far. Might that not suggest that it can't?

Not sure how many times you need to hear from how many natives speakers IT WILL NOT WORK before you accept it.:cautious:

I am closing this thread. It has gone on long enough.
