I've never understood the attraction of that (notwithstanding the fact that that would be "peanut butter and jam" in BrE). Peanut butter is a savoury food so why would anyone put it with one of the sweetest foods on the planet?! I suppose I can see how it would have worked a few decades ago when peanut butter inexplicably had sugar added to it.
As Dave said, most peanut butter (or all nut butters as far as that goes) still has quite a bit of sugar in it, although unsweetened alternatives are much more common nowadays. Actually, the higher end brands use sugar, while cheaper brands just use corn syrup or dextrose. That's partly why I was never much of a PBJ fan - too sweet for my taste. I skipped the jam/jelly, and just did straight peanut butter sandwiches.
In fact, a lazy person can even buy the two mixed together in a jar. I give you.....GOOBER!. And for the laziest of lazy, there are pre-made, crustless frozen PBJ sandwiches. I horrify you with UNCRUSTABLES.
However, many people do enjoy the sweet/savory combo and is pretty common - salted caramels, kettle corn, sugar-cured bacon, chocolate pretzels, various trail-mix combinations - the list goes on and on. Ever seen someone put salted peanuts in their Coke? I suppose you could do it with any sweetened carbonated beverage (aka 'cola', 'soda', or 'pop'), but I've only seen/heard it done with Coca-Cola.
