grab sb by the/his arm

Mrs Venn burst into the hall and grabbed Mr Such by his arm.

This sentence is taken from COMING CLEAN of the Oxford Reading Tree books. Does 'grab sb by his arm' work fine too, like 'grab sb by the arm'? Or is it just a typo?

Both 'his' and 'the' are fine.
