Note that the definition 5jj provided (2a) is a specialized meaning of the broader definition #2, which just refers to preparing someone for a specific task. It's just a coincidence they again chose a young girl for the sample sentence in #2.

You can 'groom' someone of any age for any task. The Cambridge examples make that a little clearer, as well as a surprising special context for snow, which I'd never heard and will certainly never use.
 
The snow one was new to me too. It may be jargon, but I haven't heard it in conversation.
 
I was familiar with "grooming snow" from my ski trips.

It is skiing jargon, very common here in the Great White North.
