When you say "gym sock", does it mean socks worn only gyms or general sock for workout?

It's unusual to see it in the singular but at least the sentence is specifically talking about just one sock of a pair. "Gym socks" for me are the types of socks that one would normally wear to the gym or to do other exercise. Of course, many people wear their gym socks to work or around the house but their primary purpose is exercise.
