When talking about the celebration of the first day of school, is "gymnastics was performed" correct and should it be "on the first day of school" or "on the first day at school?"

"Traditionally, gymnastics was performed on my/the first day of/at school."

"Traditionally, space after a comma gymnastics was performed on my/the first day of/at school."

I wouldn't use "gymnastics was performed". For a start, even though "gymnastics" is the (singular) name of the sport, it sounds odd to follow it with "was" because it ends with an "s" so it sounds like a plural. I wouldn't try to put it in the passive at all.

Traditionally, students performed a gymnastics routine on the first day of school.

As you can see, it's "first day of school".
