As an English teacher, you should be using correct capitalisation and punctuation.

Please rewrite your question, including at least a full sentence containing the phrases you are asking about.

In most contexts they are both correct and they mean the same.

Many thanks for your prompt help - very useful indeed and please accept apologies for not paying enough attention to punctuation - I did it in a rather casual (mobile) fashion.
 
Rephrasing my question. Please tell which phrase is correct: "half an hour" or "a half hour". I would also like to know about the level of formality i.e which one is more formal to use.
