It seems to me that the hand written signature for Howard Bauchner appears to be simply Hd Bhner. He didn't write out his full name Howard Bauchner. Am I on the right track?

I don't think that's generally true. People scribble their name in an idiosyncratic way. Which is kind of the point of a signature.
