[Grammar] Have Been To School vs Have Been At School

Hi everyone,

I have been to (the) school.
I have been at (the) school.

Is there any difference in meaning between these two prepositions? Are both grammatically correct?
Is there any difference in meaning if the definite article (the) is used?

Could please anyone explain this to me? Thank you for any replies in advance.

Not much. Here in Canada, the East Coast says "to" more often, the rest say "at" more often. I don't see any difference, although logically, at means in that location, whereas to implies a vector of approach toward the same location.
