Do native speakers say?

1, He is more stupid than her. OR

2, He is stupider than her.

3. He is more clever than her. OR

4. He is cleverer than her.

Some prefer one form, some the other. Some use one form sometimes and the other sometimes.
 
Why not "...than she (is)"?
