Which one is correct?

1) He was trampled by a lot of people.
2) He was trampled upon by a lot of people.
 
Did they literally stamp on him or was it metaphorical- they messed up his life?

They really did it. But what to say if it is being used as a metaphor?
 
Which one is correct?

1) He was trampled by a lot of people.
2) He was trampled upon by a lot of people.
I'm used to the second one, but I suppose you can use the first one if you want to.
