[Grammar] He wasn’t a stranger because I have met him before.

[FONT=&quot]Can somebody please explain why it must be "... I met him before"?
I can't find grammar reference to this particular sentence.

It would be better to use the past perfect to show that one action (met) happened before the other (wasn't). He wasn't a stranger because I had met him before. Using the past is ok but not as good.
