The spiral of heated air and moist air begins to twist and grow and spin faster and faster in a counterclockwise direction.
Do you think the sentence is transitive?

Yes.But it is from our text book, maybe it has some reasons.

Hello, Horizonincumt.:-D
In your sentence, "The spiral of heated air and moist air begins to twist and grow and spin faster and faster in a counterclockwise direction.",
the underlined part (called an "infinitive phrase") is the object of the verb 'begin', in my opinion.
