Help me understand the speech

He was an American icon. I watched him when I was young and so did my kids. He was a very gentle person who made little children feel good.

That sounds like the kind of the thing that gets you arrested over here!
 
About themselves. Sheesh. You are trodding all over a beloved childhood memory!

My older daughter met him in person when she was about two and a half. She was very upset because he "belonged" inside a TV and seeing him as a real man was confusing and puzzling to her. (The family member who was with her, however, was thrilled to meet him.)
