[Grammar] Help with a sentence - use of the word "gape"

Hi guys,

I'm translating something from German to English and I'm not sure how this sentence can be phrased correctly.
The following would be a pretty literal translation:

"The windowsill is covered in pieces of scattered/broken glas and in the window a huge hole is gaping."

Especially the last part sounds wrong to me.
I want to say that "there's a huge hole in the window". But I'm not sure if you would use the word "gape" for this or phrase it completey differently?

In BrE at least, you can say "a gaping hole".

The windowsill is covered in pieces of broken glass and there's a gaping hole in the window.

So I'd phrase it: "....and in the window there's a gaping hole."

I'd use my word order rather than yours but yours isn't wrong.
