He's better now, he needed comforted

Katara comforts Aang. Later he looked less angry. I say "he's better now, he needed comforted". Is this correct. I assume comforted is an action, and comfort is a state of being. So I feel I used it correctly.
 
No, he needed to be comforted/comforting.

That makes it look as if you could leave "to be" before "comforting". That's not right. The two options are:
1. He needed to be comforted.
2. He needed comforting.
 
Or better still write out the sentences in full, dispensing with the slash altogether.
 
I read:

He needed to be comforted.

Or:

He needed comforting.

I suppose that if you are not a native speaker there might be some confusion. However, "to be comforting" is entirely unnatural, and it would be good to learn that at some point.
