Which sentene is better? Are they both natural?

1) The variety show on this channel used to enjoy a high audience rating but now is not that popular.
2) The variety show on this channel used to enjoy a high audience ratings but now is not that popular.

Last night I was chatting with a foreigner David. He said "rating" should be "ratings", but I remember I was told that "rating" and "ratings" are both fine. Which one is correct? or both?

The context was a show used to be very popular but now it isn't.

I agree with David but that's mainly because I'd change the wording slightly.

This variety show used to be very high in the ratings but now it's not as popular.
