What is the difference between "high jinks" and "pranks"? - to me they mean pranks.

I guess what you mean is that to you they are the same thing. (Avoid defining a word by using the word. That gets you nowhere.)

"Hijinks" is the usual American spelling.

A quick look at dictionaries would tell you the difference.

"boisterous or rambunctious carryings-on"

"mischief or merrymaking that are often disruptive or rowdy"

"boisterous celebration or merrymaking; unrestrained fun."
