It's used more this way - I have high standards, they have high standards, the Marines have high standards. Standards are expectations. I expect my students to do well on tests - I have high standards and expect them to have high standards as well.

So, how would you say this?

" I sell high quality paintings?"

That's no better, for the same reasons that Gillnetter pointed out.

You could say 'I sell expensive paintings', which is what the writer is clearly trying hard to avoid saying.

Nobody could argue with that.
