Recently I had to expresse "one of my acquaintes was involved in a fraud case", and I said "he was swindled by a company".
What do you think is the difference between "hoaxer vs swindler vs cheater"?

If you look up the words in several dictionaries here: OneLook: General dictionary sites, you'll get a reasonable idea of the difference. There is some overlap in meaning, and it's not always possible to say that only one is possible in any given context.
