I was reading text then I saw this sentence: A host of progressive protest that literacy is much more complicated than a simple technical mastery of reading and writing. Can you please tell me what is the meaning of "a host of progressive " ? Thank You

Should it be "progressives" plural?

A large number of progressives say something in protest.

Not a teacher.

A host of = many
Progressives = people who are progressive thinkers
protest = third person plural form of the verb "to protest".
