I will hazard a guess and say that 5jj posted the definition because a lot of learners will be unfamiliar with the use of the word "conductor" to mean the ticket inspector/guard on a bus/train.

There's me thinking that forum members will look up an unfamiliar word or expression in a dictionary out of their own accord without somebody having to rub their noses in it. I guess it's time for me to retire my rose-tinted glasses.

Ems was right.

Not only would many be unfamiliar with the word or the role, speakers of some languages would assume it referred to the driver.

If members write in asking for the meaning of a word, I normally refer them here. I see no point in our re-inventing the wheel. However, if I am responding to a question, and I use or see a word or expression that may be new to some members, I usually provide a link to a an explanation.

5jj, why did you post the above? First I thought I had misspelled the word.

Hi Tom,

In my particular case, I was taught that 'conductor' referred to this. I had never used it in the sense provided by 5jj's llink, even though 'conductor' actually exists both in Spanish and Catalan, but I always considered it a false friend. Well, now I know better :).
