How do you help students internalize difficult vocabulary?

After a lengthy debate about this topic in my college literacy course, we realized that all of the resources we had been using could not point to very many strategies that were agreed upon to be effective. As an English teacher at the middle and high school levels, I have used many strategies in my own inexperience, but I have not felt overwhelmingly enthusiastic about any. I would love to discover unique strategies that other teachers use - in any subject areas - to teach difficult vocabulary creatively and efficiently.
