Dear teachers!
Can we say "I win from Ali"? "I cannot win from you."

Can we say "I win from Ali"? "I cannot win from you."
Perhaps you mean:

"I beat Ali; I can't beat you."
"I won against Ali. I can't win against you."

NOPE...
it will give wrong sense.

Yes, you got my question properly. But in our language we can use it both ways i.e. using the verb WIN or LOSE with the same meaning. Can't we use that in English? Are my sentences wrong?

Yes, you got my question properly.
If I got your question properly, then I fail to see how my suggestions give the wrong sense.

But in our language we can use it both ways i.e. using the verb WIN or LOSE with the same meaning.
Really? So, in your language "The Confederates lost the war" and the "Confederates won the war" mean the same? That must be a little confusing.

Can't we use that in English? Are my sentences wrong?
You sentences are possible only in this sense:

I win (money) from Ali (when I play [cards] with him). I can't win (money) from you."

Please state that you are not a teacher when you decide to contradict an experienced English teacher and native speaker from a position of very little knowledge of the language.

Thanks, Five. You've been very helpful.
What's your real name, by the way, sir?

Don't expect an answer to that question any time soon.

Please note that I win from Ali would have been a better title for your thread.

Rover

For the sake of keeping the peace, please note two things:
1) It engr.yasir ali bhatti who said it would give the wrong sense, 5jj, and not the orignal poster, AND
2) engr.yasir ali bhatti posted so closely in time to 5jj's post that I believe he was responding to the original poster, saying that the original sentences were incorrect, not 5jj's answer.

That said, engr.yasir ali bhatti, please do state you are not a teacher, and if you say that something is wrong, please state what is correct.
