I have read the following question:
How many cars does John have in his garage?

Is it correct /does/? Why not "do" because of plural;cars)?

"John" is third person singular, therefore "does" is correct.

"John" is the subject. "John does have how many cars" is the question put into the "normal" subject-verb-object pattern. (This is unnatural to say this way, I just arranged it like this for clarity.)
