Is the sentence "How many people are watching?" natural? Ethan was livestreaming tonight's club. I didn't know that but after I knew it, I asked him the question. I wanted to know if there was people watching.

Since it's clear that you found out it was being livestreamed while it was still being livestreamed, I'd say "I found out that it was being livestreamed before it finished so I asked him "How many people are watching?"

Note that "I wanted to know if there were people watching" and "How many people are watching?" are not the same. Your original context would result in the question "Is anybody watching?" and it would elicit a simple Yes/No answer. "How many people are watching?" suggests that you already suspect or assume that it's being watched and you want the answer to be a number.
