[Grammar] how to use would rather in different tenses

I was wondering if would rather is used in the following tenses only and if they are correct? Moreover, are there any other forms that I have not mentioned it here?



I. The progressive tense

A. "I'd rather be preparing a meal for the dinner tonight".

B. "I'd rather you were preparing a meal for the dinner tonight".

II. The present/future tense

A."I'd rather prepare a meal for the dinner tonight."

B. "I'd rather you prepared a meal for the dinner tonight."

III. The past tense

A."I'd rather have prepared a meal for the dinner last night/tonight."

B. "I'd rather you had prepared a meal for the dinner tonight."

IV. The past perfect progressive tense

A. "I'd rather have been preparing a meal for the dinner last night."

B. "I'd rather you had been preparing a meal for the dinner tonight."

The sentences you asked about are all correct but many of the tense names aren't.

Also, and as I corrected in your previous similar thread, you need to remove the definite article from before "dinner" each time.

The dinner is okay if we're referring to a specific event. The Lions Club had a big dinner meeting. I prepared a meal for the dinner last night.​
