Hi,

Could someone clarify this for me please. How would I write the following sentence And why:

I doubt that majority of the population of this forum understand english, and thus we should probably continue in russian

OR

I doubt that majority of the population of this forum understandS english, and thus we should probably continue in russian

Many thanks ahead of time! :)

Tip for a better thread title: Majority understand/understands.

You need a or the before 'majority'.

'...a majority of the population understands English', and '...the majority of the population understand English'.

'A majority' means 'a greater proportion of people' (singular).

'The majority' means 'most people' (plural).

Always capitalise English and Russian.

Hi there,

I doubt if "population" is the most approproate term for people in the forum. I would say "members" instead, for instance.
