This is the second question: How will you extend yourself beyond your project/studies to become actively involved in Irish society, in order to maximise your academic and cultural exchange experience and to raise awareness of the GOI-IES programme in Ireland and beyond?
I intend to actively engage with Irish society beyond my academic programme in order to foster meaningful cultural exchange and contribute positively to the community around me. I believe that the value of an international scholarship lies not only in academic achievement but also in building relationships, sharing experiences, and promoting mutual understanding.
At University College Cork, I hope to participate actively in student organisations and intercultural activities that bring together students from diverse backgrounds. I have an interest in art, visual culture and history, so I will be joining the Art History Society, this society is open to all students regardless if they were studying art or history. I will participate in a variety of events including gallery tours, engaging guest lectures, film nights, hands-on creative workshops, museum visits and games/ quizzes held on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
Engaging in the Environmental Society, a student-led sustainability initiative would allow me to connect my academic interest in sustainable business with real-world environmental efforts in Ireland. I am particularly interested in participating in local environmental and community projects, such as volunteering in initiatives that promote waste reduction, recycling, and sustainable consumption. This would provide an opportunity to learn from Ireland’s innovative sustainability practices while also sharing perspectives from environmental initiatives in Nigeria.
Cultural exchange will also be an important aspect of my engagement. As someone from Nigeria, I look forward to sharing aspects of Nigerian culture through conversations, cultural events, potlucks and student forums. I am eager to immerse myself in Irish culture, foods like soda bread, Irish stew, potato pancakes and many more traditions, and also community life in order to better understand Ireland’s social values, history, and contemporary society. Food, storytelling, and discussions about African history and development challenges can create meaningful opportunities for dialogue and learning.
I got to learn of the scholarship through an alumni on a social media platform and I intend to do the same. I will contribute to raising awareness of the Government of Ireland International Education Scholarship by sharing my experience with prospective students and academic communities in Nigeria and other developing countries. Through social media platforms like Linkedin, YouTube, alumni networks, and mentorship conversations with students interested in studying abroad, I hope to highlight Ireland as a welcoming and academically enriching destination for international education. Sharing insights about studying at University College Cork and the opportunities offered through the scholarship will help broaden awareness of Ireland’s educational excellence and encourage stronger academic connections between Ireland and Nigeria.
Ultimately, my goal is to act as a bridge between cultures, contributing positively to the academic and social life of my host institution while promoting the values of international collaboration and knowledge exchange that the Government of Ireland International Education Scholarship represents.
