I am reading an news article “The art of safer snow shoveling”(https://yle.fi/a/74-20008247).

“It is important that the handle on a snow sledge is the right length, not to short and not too long. A handle that is too long leads to a constant raising of the shoulders, and if too short it leads to them being hunched down. ”.

I am not clear what is the meaning of “…it leads to them being hunched down. ”. In the above citation, is them referred to shoulders and what does it look like about hunched down?

If the handle is short, it'll make the user bend down, hunching his shoulders.

Imagine a six foot man using a shovel with a short handle. He'll have to bend down, hunching his shoulders. Yes, "them" refers to the user's shoulders.

Hunching refers to the depression of the shoulders when you use a shovel that's too short for you. It refers to the bending-down posture.
