What is the difference between "hurry around" and "hurry"?

ma14)I recently read Momo, a novel by Michael Ende....But then the thieves arrive in town. They steal the townspeople's spare time, and consequently, force them to hurry around, trying to get things done...

"Hurry around" conveys the idea of the townspeople moving quickly from one place to another, and then on to somewhere else and so on. If he had used only "hurry", it would not have implied movement so strongly, as one can hurry to get something done whilst staying in the same place.
