I always loved reading, so among my favorite things to read are, of course, a lot of self-help books.

In your sentence, "so" means "therefore" or "because of that." That's not what you want to say. Jutfrank's correction makes the sentence make more sense.

When in doubt, simplify! Two short sentences are often more natural than one long one.

Likewise, your "of course" is clutter. There's no reason for us to assume that you love self-help books. Not everyone does.

Another small point is about your tense. Are you saying you no longer love reading? The second sentence implies that you still enjoy it. If that's true, your first sentence should be "I have always loved reading."
