Is 'what' needed?

1- I am feeling better than (what) I was yesterday.
2- I am wiser than (what) I was 2 years ago.
3- I need to be better than (what) I am.
4- I gave him a better pen than (what) he wanted.
5- I am stronger than (what) you think.
6- This place is better than (what) you said.

Using "what" in all those sentences is wrong. You'll hear it from some native speakers but it's still grammatically incorrect.

Thank you. I have some doubt regarding #4. It's not about 'what'. The sentence does not sound good. Could you please rearrange it?
